Earlier this week Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski dropped her bid for a second term. It was a major development in the #utpol-universe, in an off-cycle year when not a lot of other municipal races will command the public’s attention. The 53-year-old Democrat cited a family situation for her sudden change of heart, an explanation met with equal parts sympathy and skepticism (don’t all politicians say this?). But taken in the context of other “one-term” storylines this week, I thought it was worth weighing how the media presents the one-and-done officeholder as a narrative device.
